Clutton Primary School Scheme Of Work Part 1

A folder called “Scheme of Work was borrowed from the school it consists of eleven folders (83 pages). Unfortunately this is not dated but a very rough idea of the date can be established since in the English folder “Marion Richardson writing will be introduced to give a fluent rhythm to their writing”, this was published as a series of hinged cards, to assist teachers in 1934. In the Mathematics folder the English coin the farthing is still being used in sums; the farthing creased to be legal tender in 1960. Quite a wide span of years.

Below is a selection of the syllabus from the folders –

Arithmetic – Junior 7 to 8 years old

A. ORAL
Notation to 100 forwards and backwards.
Rapid addition and subtraction of 2 and 3, round the class to a limit of about 30,
e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 ….; 19, 17, 15, 13 ……;
8, 11, 14 …….

Components of 10 to be known thoroughly.

Addition of any two units, either automatically or with decomposition of 10 as a basis. Subtraction within these limits.

Multiplication tables 2, 3, 4 and 5 times built up and memorised; application to halves, thirds, quarters. First notions of inches, pounds, ounces; dozen and score.

Money tables; pence to 30d. = 2/6d. and the reverse.

Simple oral problems, i.e. sums in story form on the above including shopping items.

B. WRITTEN

Writing down the answers to sums set in words and dictated by the teacher, e.g.:-

1. Write the number 17.
How many legs have 10 cows?
There are 5 birds on each of three branches of a tree; how many on the tree?

2. Speed Tests. Mechanical examples.
30 - 1 = ; 7 + 8 = ; 15 - 7 = ;
1/2 of 24 = ; 1/6 = ; 20d. = ;

Writing series, e.g.:-
2, 4, 6, 8 ………;
27, 25, 23 ………

Extension of tables as preparation for multiplication:-
(3 x 2) + 1 = ; (4 x 3) + 2 = ;

PRACTICAL ARITHMETIC
Drawing lines a given number of inches in length.
Rough measurements in feet.
Use of paper ruled in quarter inch squares to illustrate tables, and to demonstrate that:-
e.g. 5 x 4 = ; 4 x 5 = 20.

Keeping a shop, giving change, etc.
Use of simple measure; pint, pound, yard, etc.
Rough division of rectangle and square into halves and quarters.

Arithmetic – Junior 8 to 9 years old

Multiplication tables 7 and 8 times learnt by heart and daily revision of other tables.
Money tables, £ and shillings to shillings and the reverse.
Miscellaneous oral problems.

B. WRITTEN.

Dictated and speed tests as before. At least one of each should be given each week.
The concrete side of Arithmetic must on no account be neglected.

PRACTICAL ARITHMETIC.

Continued measurement of lines in inches, with extension to half-inches.
Drawing simple plans of rectangular objects. A match box opened out will be one problem.
Measurements of objects in the classroom in feet and inches, or both, and of dimensions of the room.
Simple drawing of plans to scale, e.g. 1” to 1 ft.

WRITTEN ARITHMETIC.

Vertical addition and subtraction with 1,000 as limit.
Multiplication and division, including 7, 8 and 20 as multipliers and divisors.
Vertical addition and subtraction of £ s d and pence and farthings.
Multiplication and division of money; £ s d by numbers from 2 to 8 with no farthings remaining.
Reductions of £ and s., s and d., pence and farthings.
Four rules in yards, feet and inches with simple examples.

Art and Craft – Junior

SELF EXPRESSION

Standard Colours and Charcoal.

Objects from stories, songs, poems, projects, etc.
Sketching out of doors emphasising distance.

PAPER CUT-OUTS

The Weathercock, Autumn, Christmas Day, Making the Christmas Toys, Elfin Painters, Seaside, Autumn, Winter sliding, Bringing home the Yule Log, The Cracker, The Lighthouse, Posters.

OBJECTS

Two or more objects for comparison.
Pen sketching, printing.

STANDARDS IIIA AND IV.

Art colours introducing light and shade.
Self Expression as for above.
Stencils, Potato cuts, Stick printing.
Pictures in paper and paint.
Interior decoration.
Colour in Dress.
Designs in Contrast, Analogous and dominant harmony.
Study of Early Civilisation Art Design.

APPLICATION

Needlework, book-binding and weaving.

PRINTING

Posters, Slogans, Pen Writing of Poems, etc.
